"...Hicks' leg was amputated May 22, 2008. He lost his leg after an infection from a gunshot wound to his left foot intensified following an accident in Iraq while serving with the Alabama National Guard as part of the 161st Area Support Medical Battalion. He was an athlete before he lost his leg, and even before the decision was made to have it amputated, he began the search for his first prosthetic and running leg.

That is when he met Glenn Crumpton, a licensed prosthetist with Alabama Artificial Limb and Orthopedic Service. The AALOS is one of Hicks' sponsors for the trip, with costs including flight, hotel, a Chinese visa, uniforms and the price of shipping Hicks' bike $200 each way.

"Our money sponsorship is probably the smallest part of what we do to get him there," Crumpton said. "We have a lot of pride watching him succeed." READ MORE

"Larry was well loved and respected by all of us, but he was especially dedicated to the young pediatric patients he worked with, and they were all just crazy about him," said Jerry Swanson, CP, and president of Alabama O&P. "He and I were friends and worked together for more than 30 years. I will miss him both professionally and personally."

Rohling served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and was educated at Columbia State Community College and Northwestern University. He was co-owner of Alabama O&P for many years, before leaving to open his own practice in Florence in 1990. In 1994, ,he sold his practice to Alabama O&P and worked there until his death.

Larry, who passed away on June 11, 2011 at the age of 63 will be sorely missed by the Alabama P&O community, and his family: wife Beth Chance Rohling; daughter Jamie Bedingfield; son Stuart Rohling; and his four grandchildren: Kaileigh,-Skylaur and Pazlie Beddingfield, and Kyla Rohling.
